Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette and Emile Hirsh also star in the adaptation of Nick Hornby’s best-selling novel with BBC Films backing.
Imogen Poots has signed to star opposite Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette and Emile Hirsh in French filmmaker Pascal Chaumeil‘s A Long Way Down.
The script details the story of four disparate individuals who meet one another on a London roof top on New Year’s Eve all with the same intention to commit suicide. Instead of jumping, these complete strangers make a pact to stay alive and stay together until Valentine’s Day, at least.
Marking Chaumeil’s English-language debut, the project is an adaptation of Nick Hornby‘s novel of the same name and is being produced by Finola Dwyer andAmanda Posey via the duo’s Wildgaze Films.
BBC Films, the pubcaster’s standalone movie-making unit, has come aboard as equity co-financier and U.K. broadcaster.
Making it’s market debut at the Marche du Film, sales banner Hanway Films has inked deals with Lionsgate for U.K. rights — aside from TV broadcast — while DCM , formerly Delphi, has taken the title for German speaking Europe and Svensk signed for Scandinavia.
In addition to the German speaking rights DCM is also acting as an equity co-producer.
Chaumeil directs from a script by Jack Thorne (The Scouting Book For Boys) with shooting scheduled to start in September on location in London.

STYLING the country’s best-loved names makes for pretty memorable fashion story, but Voguefashion editor Francesca Burns says there was one moment on the June issue’s London Pridephotoshoot that was truly unforgettable. A celebration of the nation’s most brilliant stars, the spread features young faces such as Pixie Geldof, Rafferty Law and Alexa Chung, as well as established national treasures, including Vivienne Westwood, Ian McKellen and David Walliams.
“One of the reasons I got into fashion was because of Vivienne Westwood – I was utterly obsessed with her as a teenager, so I was so nervous to be working with her,” Burns told us. “But she was incredibly down to earth and happy to strip down to her fantastic tartan knickers in the middle of the Wallace Collection.”
Entitled London Pride, the shoot covers a wide range of areas – from music, with The xx and the Artic Monkeys’ Alex Turner; to acting, including Imogen Poots and Tom Hardy; to models such as Lara Stone and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley; to young talent, featuringJeremy Irvine and Douglas Booth; to sporting stars such as Olympic swimmer Tom Daley and Olympic gymnast Louis Smith. Each shot captures each of its subjects in a way that reveals an insight into his or her personality – as seen in the picture of girlfriend and boyfriendGeorgia May Jagger and Josh McLellan, who are caught in a romantic kiss.
The biggest roadblock to getting a biopic about a musician made is clearing the rights to the (usually expensive) songs and pleasing the estate. If the artist in question is still alive, the process can be made slightly easier, but if not, projects can drag in develop as everyone involved tries to find common ground to meet on financially and creatively. Which leads us to “All Is By My Side,” the long, long brewing Jimi Hendrix pic with Andre 3000 in the lead that, out of nowhere, was announced earlier this week as gearing up to start shooting in a matter of weeks. We wondered if this might mean Experience Hendrix were on board with the movie too — turns out, they’re not.
In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, the company says it “has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.” We presume lawsuits are just waiting to happen, so it’ll be interesting to see how the filmmakers behind “All By My Side” get around the issue. We presume cover versions will be used — as was done in the 2000 TV movie “Hendrix” — but it even seems that Experience Hendrix might throw down the gauntlet if that happens, depending on how they view the term “copyrights.”
But regardless, the pic is soldiering on, with Variety reporting that Haywell Atwell – who talked about the film as early as last summer – is confirmed, with Imogen Poots (“Fright Night,” “Solitary Man“) also coming on board. Penned by John Ridley (“Three Kings,” “U-Turn“) who will be directing as well, the film will essentially cover Hendrix’s breakthrough period from 1966 to 1967. He was discovered in a New York club by Linda Keith, a model and the girlfriend of Keith Richards at the time, who introduced him to The Rolling Stones’ manager Andrew Loog Oldham and producer Seymour Stein (who both declined to work with him), and eventually to manager/producer Chas Chandler who helped launch his career. He went to London, recorded Are You Experienced? and made music history.
Production kicks off later this month.
